One of the major gaps in the mental health system has been our inability to recruit and retain new staff. While funding has been a huge part of this, there are also other concerns that have been largely unaddressed. Systemically, there are issues that arise when young people are looking for career opportunities in mental health in high school, community college or at a four year school. Collectively we all have to work together to make careers in mental health more attractive including developing career ladders, incentives for young people to come into our field, training recruiter and education professionals that working in the mental health field is a viable career and of course more funding.
To the credit of Commissioner Sullivan and the Office of Mental Health, they are addressing these concerns in several ways through credentialing and developing a one stop web page that is dedicated to providing training opportunities, materials and tools to better serve individuals in need.
