Strategies to Promote COVID-19 Mental Health Equity in New York State’s Mental Health System

NY’s minority communities are disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 virus in terms of infection and mortality. The populations served in NY’s mental health system represent an intersection of several subpopulations identified as being at a significantly greater risk for COVID-19 exposure (e.g. racial/ethnic minorities, people suffering from discrimination, poverty, medical co-morbidities, lack of access to health care). These groups will face increasingly high mental health effects, including longer-term effects associated with trauma and economic dislocation for an already economically stressed group.

In collaboration with the Nathan Kline Institute, Center for Research on Cultural & Structural Equity (CCASE) and the New York State Psychiatric Institute, Center of Excellence for Cultural Competence, OMH’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion will be hosting a webinar that will explore how COVID-19 is affecting minority/special populations with a particular focus on the increased mental health needs of these populations. The subject matter experts will identify the root causes of the disparities being created by COVID-19 as well as provide tangible action steps to be taken by the mental health system in response to these disparities.
