BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. — A discussion on mental health and wellness in the school community is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15 in Ballston Spa High School auditorium.
The event is being held in collaboration with the Mental Health Association in New York State, Inc.
The program, Mental Health and Wellness 101, presents an opportunity to reframe the conversation about mental health and an understanding that all people have mental health. It is not just the presence or absence of an illness.
A critical component of the district’s Safe, Secure, and Welcoming School Facilities initiative is that people inside the buildings are healthy and well and do not pose a threat. Understanding mental health, and when students need help and support can make a difference for them all.
The discussion will focus on understanding of mental health as an integral part of overall health and a continuum of wellness; a brief overview of the prevalence of youth mental health problems; the effects of mental illness on learning and student behaviors; signs and symptoms; risk and protective factors; and the promotion of coping strategies, help-seeking behaviors and the concept of recovery.
Community members, parents, and staff are all invited to attend and participate in this conversation.
For more information, call school district Health Leader Collen Ferlo 518-885-7150.
