MH Update – 10/10/19 – MHANYS Celebrates World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10 every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the globe.  This year’s theme is “40 seconds of action” focusing on suicide prevention.

MHANYS is proud to be a member of the Schools and Youth Workgroup of the Suicide Prevention Council at New York State Office of Mental Health which developed “A Guide for Suicide Prevention in New York Schools”.  Through the School Mental Health Resource and Training Center, we provide resources for suicide prevention education, professional development on suicide prevention for all school staff and technical assistance.  View this brief World Health Organization video highlighting the role school leaders can take to promote a safe school environment where students and staff can feel empowered to get help when needed.

In addition, World Mental Health Day is a great opportunity to remind educators of the opportunities to teach students about mental health beyond the health curriculum.  MHANYS’ School Mental Health Training and Resource Center has developed four lesson plans for different grade levels and disciplines that teachers can use in their classes to educate youth about mental health concerns affecting people around the world.
