In the Governor’s proposed Executive Budget, there was $500,000 added for the School Mental Health Resource and Training Center. The Center was started by MHANYS in 2018 as part of the response to New York’s passage of the School Mental Health Education Legislation. This legislation was the first of its kind in the country and has helped to spark national discussion about mandating the teaching of mental health in schools.
The New York Model as seen here through the infographic has embraced almost 90% of New York’s school communities through on-line and in person (Pre-COVID) trainings, webinars, in-person engagements (Pre-COVID), and panel discussions with teachers, families, students and administrators. More than the number, the Resource Center has worked in partnership with schools across New York State to help infuse a greater understanding of mental health and wellness as part of the school climate.
