MHANYS Hero Program

Become a MHANYS HERO

The MHANYS HERO Program is a peer support training to give all first responders the key skills to become resilient and join a supportive network focused on a standard of care. The first responder will receive a certification for each specific course completed below. Once all are attained, the first responder will be credentialed as a MHANYS HERO.

Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an 8-hour training course designed to give first responders and the public key skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Modules include Fire/EMS, Public Safety, Corrections and Military, Veterans and their families.

MHFA is an evidence-based training with various first responder specific modules

SafeTALK for First Responders

This four-hour training equips people to be more alert to someone thinking of suicide and to be better able to connect them with further help.

MHANYS has staff trained in SafeTALK for first responders.

Science of Addiction and Recovery

This training details the impact of substance use on the brain, and includes participant practice, feedback, discussion, and tips for effectively delivering the message to new audiences.

FBINAA Resilience Officer Training

The Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy Associates (FBINAA) was first developed by the United States Air Force (USAF). The program includes the fundamental resiliency principles of the USAF, but has been adapted for use in law enforcement. MHANYS has two FBINAA train-the-trainers on staff.

Additional Training Opportunities

MHANYS CarePath™ for First Responder Families

MHANYS staff will develop online, self-paced, psychoeducational material accessible to all first responders (and their families) to accommodate their busy schedules. Materials will focus on health, wellness, and connecting to care. 

International Critical Incident Stress Foundation Inc Assisting Individuals in Crisis and Group Crisis Intervention & Advanced Courses

Designed to present the core elements of a comprehensive, systematic and multi-component crisis intervention curriculum, this course will prepare participants to  understand a wide range of crisis intervention services for both the individual and  for groups. Fundamentals of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) will be outlined and participants will leave with the knowledge and tools to provide several group crisis interventions, specifically demobilizations, defusing, and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD). The need for appropriate follow-up services and referrals when necessary will also be discussed.
